Five Firsts

Something rather interesting is going on here, deep below the surface of the miniscule (yet well crafted and much appreciated) comments in this blog. I fear that my free site meter might be skipping like a vinyl record. But let’s assume not for the sake of my fragile ego. Last Friday marked a first… the first day Cool People received a three-digit number of visitors in one day. (Insert girlish squeal here.)

So… thanks. Thanks for being here. Make yourself comfortable. Have some cheese.

Since we’re getting to know each other, I feel compelled to tell you that I’ve never played meme tag in a blogger nor email sort of way. You have no way of knowing “10 Things I Did Yesterday” or “Five Things You Don’t Know About Me.” And in the spirit of transparency, I feel the need to get a little naked.

Which leads me to the creation of my own meme, Five Firsts. Technically, it’s not a meme unless it gets some legs, so let’s just call it a wee-bit-o-me.

1. First pet. A little white lab mouse named Pipa (pronounced “pee-pah”). She died on my birthday.

2. First day on the job at Earthlink (then Mindspring). I walked around the office all morning with my zipper down.

3. First “love.” Eighth-grader, Anthony Polifronio, the Italian stallion safety patrol guard. There was something about his perfectly coiffed wings and shiny badge that made me swoon… despite his tiny teeth and too-tight jeans.

4. First prayer after my first communion. I prayed that I would become a nun. Cried all day with regret. Retracted with humility. And promised to be a good mother one day.

5. First job in high school. Cemetery plot sales. I lasted a week.

Your firsts can be anything. First day of school. First rejection. First taste of octopus. First child. First meal of the day. First talent show performance. First thing I did today. First ride on a big wheel. First night in Belgium. First Friday of the month. First big break. First pregnancy. First (whatever).

So in the spirit of full inclusion, consider yourself tagged.
