I enjoyed a lengthy stay in my son’s room tonight before bed. We had just finished reading a few pages in his latest library selection, Mysteries of the Universe, and he started a conversation around the mysteries of human growth and persona.
“Why does it take so long to grow up?” He asked.
My six-year old likes the idea of being able to make decisions for himself and often gets frustrated when he is unable to do things because of his age… things like stay up late to explore the mysteries of adulthood, drive his kid four-wheeler one-handed down the steep hill in our front yard, or cruise the house with my iPod on his own free will. I explained the fact that he would grow up in a flash and to just have fun being a kid.
“But I like to be in charge,” he continued with a smile.
“Well, one day, you'll be in charge. And when you grow up, maybe you can become president.” I replied. “Or, you can be an astronaut, or a scientist, or a race car driver, or… maybe you can be like me and work with computers.”
To that my free-spirited boy responded, “Nah. I just wanna be normal like Daddy.”
