Casting Stones and the Act of Forgiveness

Last week I bumped into the Lord's Prayer in my mom's little black Bible in Luke 11:1-4. It's easy to go through the motions of reciting the prayer in church each Sunday, but when I read it... text in black in white, it reminded me of the importance of forgiveness. In order to receive it, we must give it freely.

So when my three-year old daughter shared the story (for the fifth time) of the two-year boy who (accidentally) hit her with a small rock, I decided that it was time to chat about forgiveness.

"Everyone makes mistakes," I started, "like when you spill your milk or throw a toy in the house. I always forgive you. I make mistakes too... and I ask for forgiveness. I ask God to forgive me. Or, sometimes I ask Daddy to forgive me."

"You do?" she asked, seemingly entranced in my lesson.

"Yes, and he always does." I replied confidently.

"You throwed a rock at Daddy?!"

Whether you're carrying, casting or dodging a stone, or feeling the sting of its hit, stop and take a moment to forgive.

Wonderful, of course. And thanks for the reminder. On carrying a stone... and the lesson it can teach on forgiving ourselves, check out (again, if you have already seen this superb Korean flick) "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring."
