I crave thoughtful feedback. Good. Bad. Whatever. It makes me a better person. When I started this blog, I sent it out to a few close friends and family. Good stuff came back. My Dad calls it my "bog" and my mother-in-law thinks it's a "blob". But perhaps the most interesting response came from Aunt Prue. "Why are you doing this??" Direct. Honest. And totally valid. It made think.
So, in case you are wondering, here are five reasons why I'm doing this.
1. I am thankful for the diverse collection of amazing people around me - people who have influenced my thoughts and actions, and continue to help shape the person I hope to become. It's my way of saying thanks.
2. I am a frustrated painter with no time, energy and space to paint. Think of this blog as a studio of colorful little portraits. Over time, they will blend into a self-portrait of sorts.
3. I secretly hope to become discovered by a well-known publisher who wants to pay me millions to write about whatever I want to write about. Alas, I have no plans to quit my day job.
4. Small talk is boring. I prefer to dig deep. It's hard to find hidden greatness, unless you can get past the surface. It's hard to get past the surface, unless you ask questions. It's hard to ask questions if you spend too much time talking small talk. This blog represents a log of my digs.
5. When I run out of cool people to write about, I'll know it's time to broaden my circle.
My question for you... Why are you reading this?

I really like the line about how a lot of posts about people you know add up to a self-portrait. Profound.
You add a good bit to the discussion about why blogging is important.
theres not enough thoughtful, funny, sexy, funny, creative, funny, interesting, funny, provocative, funny, chill, funny, profound, funny and funny people out there
im sick of j-lo, brangelina, aids, george w., nuclear war, he said/she said
we still have our lives we live
which can be full of compassion and laughs
no matter who or what has hurt us
everyones too busy sueing or exploding each other to notice
except you stephanie
Thanks so much for the feedback. Anonymous, I'm glad you notice.
Regards,
Stephanie
I'm reading this because I love you, Stephanie and your sweet family. You are such a bright, loving, caring young person who has so much to give this world. I think your web site is awesome and now I know why you are doing this. Keep it coming!
Stephanie, you continue to amaze me! Of all the people I've known in my 38 years, you may be the most talented, interesting and genuine. I have finally found some time to myself to read this and I must say that I just love your blog!
Not to ignore your points as to why you blog, but rather to address the question as to why I was reading this:
I think to understand better why I blog(ged). I can't bring myself to address it in past tense, but having not written since May, that would seemingly be most appropriate.
Except! (But of course there must be an except!) Except that I believe blogging, in it's general sense, is less about posting random impressions of the news or world or current events, so much as it is about thinking about what's ocurring in the world, and being willing to be open and honest with respect to what you think. Welcoming and respecting criticism.
It is less an expression about what you think about the world so much as it is an expression THAT you think about the world.
But hey, that could just be me.
Being honest.
Because you sound honest. I guess we/I crave/admire honesty. :)
Met Steph on the 3-Day. Got to know her some, we don't live that close to one another so this way I can catch up on the 'big' things that are going on in her life. As awesome as she sounds in her blog-times that by 1000 and that's how totally cool she really is...HvB
I love blogging because it allows me access to a different community of people. Don't get me wrong, I love my home town. BUT . . . art & poetry leaves them pretty much baffled. Blogging lets me find people interested in what I'm interested in that I might not find in my home town.
I'm reading this because I'm curious about creative people and am always searching for like-minded individuals to offer-support-to and be-supported-by.
Cool blog. Well done. Keep up the good work.
Reading this because I loved your name when I found it over on my blog ... wanted to know who the littlepurplecow was :)
I'm reading it because I've asked tha question of myself - why am I doing this? So I'm fascinated by other bloggers' explanations and explorations of that... Here's a link to that post:

Meanwhile, I look forward to checking out more of your blog!
The idea of your blog fascinates me. Your answers are honest, funny and right on the money. I'm off to explore!
I agree with eric. I blog and read blogs looking for like minded individuals as well as people who are completely different who offer new perspectives, curiosity about people in general creative people in particular and the amazing opportunity to connect with people all over the globe. I found yours through Ali Edwards and bookmarked it so I can return again and again.
How odd to realize how little you know about someone by stumbling upon their blog.
How did I never get to know this side of you? My fault, no doubt.
The good news -- perhaps -- is that maybe it's possible to get to know you better. Does that all have to be by blog?
How did I get here?
Today being the last day of the year I started thinking about the purpose of life I then wanted to find out how many people (like me ) read the book "The purpose Driven life" and came across your blog....
I wish you a very happy and purposeful 2008.

Thanks for the comment on my flickr photo!
We blog for many of the same reasons!
I read your blog because I was curious if your desires in exploring your life through art, and writing shares touch points with my own curiosities...
Your blog is so human and curious. I read it because its interesting and REAL.
So thank you.

Hi Stephanie,
I found your blog just after I sent an e-mail to Jeff.
It's just like you were in high school...a deep pond with a quiet surface. (That's supposed to be a compliment, btw)
Loved your post about the servicemembers in the airports. They are great kids. Above all, they are US.

I am reading this because I am able to relate to you in so many ways.
Why am I reading this? I searched for string "Life list" on google, which lead to one thing and another, and something irrelevant, and then... and then your blog @ August 27,07 ("Do you have a life list..."). I myself have been wondering what's the difference between people like me - for whom life lists are a bust - and people "like you."
See, I can make a list. But most of what's on it won't ever be accomplished (ex. Prove Bill Bryson wrong by actually visiting the Oort Cloud). Seeing the list sit, unrequited and unachieved is pretty depressing, of course, but I've learned that the gist of the difference between me and you lies in what we put on the list to begin with. So I'm reading your blog to see what sort of stuff that is.
I read this part as a start to get 'to know' you. Chris of Art of Non-Conformity mentioned your blog, I hopped over and started our 'relationship'. Like your style of writing of this Why. So now I'm gonna explore your blog because the Why was interesting enough for me.
